Damn Nice Sweet Movie!

hi...

actuallie earlier on i wanted to talk about some piece of saddening news that is about to change my views spiritually...even though it hasn't done much to me in terms of life on earth. right now..I am just some confused soul...and to add to the confusion, earlier on, i bought a vcd (that's unusual...considering i normally rent onlie) but i tot that this is a really good buy. Including the gorillaz album at 12 plus dollars onlie..but that's another story.

right now..what i can onlie say is that i don't have that much of a good impression over Malaysian malay movies which basically centered over those good looking singers made good...and crossing them over to the other side..Movies lah, what u thinking? It's like one hot celebrity couple...both with good genes..both successful on their own, and what do u get when you merge them together? voila! not onlie do they get an official marriage certificate, they get tonnes of money from doing movies that centre over their love lives based on fictitious story. But this malaysian made movie? Actuallie, I am proud of it..I am so mixed with emotions (i get emotional over movies..figures why i prefer watching vcds not in the cinemas)...that I tot all my 19.90 is not wasted. better than buying another pair of shoes.

Okay..actuallie I like inter racial relationships...not coz of the beautiful babies that they're gonna have most probably...but I like it because of the couples' ability to cross over any obstacles and their love...is definitely stronger. K..before u think I am beating around the bush, I watched the movie called 'Sepet'...basically 'Sepet' means small eyes...often describing a chinese pair of eyes which are usually two slits..keke...but hey, being 'sepet' is still unique k?....reallie!

first of all...despite the very quick 'falling in love' process..which I akin to 'love at first sight'...but halfway through the movies..I discover their pretty long gaze is not some ordinary gaze. It's like he recalled her from his childhood..this mysterious malay girl...and for her, her dislike for malay guys basically coz of their sheer laziness and also from watching far too many chinese movies..keke...it's like they share this bond which they are quick to explore later, though halfway through the movie, it got to a point that u wonder if this love bonding that they share is gonna last? if u talk about parents disapproving their relationships, that will be so cliche. They are so 'ok' with it except for the girl's father lah, which her mum and very friendly servant concludes that he's just jealous..hah!

and although this girl wears baju kurung, a traditional malay baju for girls and ladies, which quickly conjures up this image of a girl who is really this typical sweet gal type..u are wrong. And if u think that this pirated vcd seller with a loud coloured hair who set up temp shops at the sidewalk is some loud speaking guy with an attitude to boot..u are wrong too! That's the beauty of the show! It simply cross over borders of stereotypes which make u wonder what else is in store in this movie that goes beyond what we have our ears and eyes trained to watch. K...in other words, the malay girl in the movie is the one having the attitude to boot..she oozes charm and sweetness but at the same time, is not afraid to speak her mind although at one point, u're wondering if she truly does have this dislike over malay guys who are 'mixed'..typical in Malaysia where they have some western blood too thanks to one of their parents' genes. But yeah lah..that malay guy whom she had a quarrel with also categorizes her under the sort of malay girls who onlie sniff out ang moh (caucasian) guys from bars..thus labelling her as a slut. Then all this quarrel points out to the fact that she just had a bad encounter with his friend, who was trying to get 'fresh' with her.

And of coz lah..it also made her have stronger feelings towards the Chinese guy, who is often this scratching head..love sick..sort of guy...like he wants to approach her but is making very subtle moves...to think that he is supposed to be an ah beng (chinese gangster type)...And can I add that he's so soft spoken I had to put on earphones just to make out what he is saying...even though I had the volume up to the maximum. Then during those uber sweet moments..that make me gush gush gush all the way....he often 'fess up over how he loves her...but although u know she surely loves him too like how she calls him 'ayang' (sweetheart)...it's onlie twds a third of the movie, u think that she's not too sure if she truly loves him. It's like she's having this mixed sort of feelings...and it's not over the 'race issue'..but more like whether she should continue trusting guys for the bad encounter she went through at her friend's party. For example, when they went to a dark area, where he confessed that his name is not Jason, and started to question her if she truly did love him like he loves her (awwww..................................), he tried to kiss her of which she fell back and recalled that awful memory. But I think it's just the director's way of saying that even though she's trying to break away from all the stereotypes of malaysian malay movies, kissing is still a no-no for a Malay. For such a beautifully written movie, it'd be a waste to totally censor it just coz of this supposedly kissing scene. Although I must say, even without the kissing, there is still some elements of sensuality like the teasing among her parents...(ahem..HER PARENTS!) on a few separate scenes. Hey, if u want ur movie to be internationally acclaimed, sometimes u gotta produce some elements common within international standards so totally understandable lah but not necessarily agreeable on the board of censorship part..keke..

Oh yeah...and him trying to kiss her some more in a dark alley is not because he is trying to be a 'chee ko pek' (dirty ol' man..) but because he is this guy who is so into romantic poetry. A kiss, to him, would perfectly seal in over the fact that he truly loves her...and u would almost give him ur approving nod..err..because before that supposed scene, he was reading a prose from some poetry book...which described the moment spot on...

Even though almost half of this movie, he didn't quite shine through...sometimes u wonder if he really is in love with her...it was the later half...tat I swear if my brother was not around and my mum was sleeping, I would have cried buckets. It was like..this Malay girl....gave him this new belief...this new hope....that there is this such thing as love being merely a language not necessarily translated in words....realism sinks in which later jeopardised his love for this girl. No matter what...he is still this gangster plagued by a motley crew of chinese gangsters who extort protection money like they own the road...and also he is still being 'pursued' by the sister of the head of the gang which he later turned his and her frustations into a night of passion which became the brunt of the disintegration of his love life with the malay girl. The sheer tot of reading a letter from him stating how he got the girl pregnant..and his commitment to be responsible for his action....and her disbelief in realising the ugly side of her chinese boyfriend...

But still having been a saviour to each other, and the ever growing strength of their love, even though it was a very painful realism, they still had this longing desire to be together. Like despite him getting the girl pregnant...and for her, lapsing into the arms of the Malay guy who tried to get fresh with her and changing her image to a more westernised outlook (despite her saying at first that despite the British having left Malaysia so long ago, Malaysians are still very much part of the Western culture, thus her rebellion by wearing baju kurungs onlie).

In the end, much to her mum's persuasion to read the letter he wrote and secretly deposited in her mail box, and his friend encouraging him not to give up on his love despite his numerous failed attempts to talk to her....at one point, when u tot things are going to be okay, u are left with this thought if they are truly still going to be together. It was what I call, a semi tragic conclusion. U are made to believe two conclusions. When she finally got thru him while crying at the back of her father's car on the way to the airport (she got a scholarship to study in England)...to confess that she does love him...he was there lying on the roadside, dead from an accident with the phone ringing beside him. Just as u thought, there was no more for this truly sad love story, he picked up the phone. U wanted to breathe a sigh of relief when he said he knew it was her when she called...and also how he knew that she loves him...and that she missed him and would meet him soon when back from England....But all that while, u onlie see her crying while confessing her love..then again, u can't jump for joy. U don't know if it was just her trying to console herself...or her last words to him...

But for me..my onlie conclusion is that....if this is really true love....even when u are not living in the same physical world any longer, ur hearts still beat as one...even if those are the very last words u'd probably hear when u are gone especially if those are the words u've been wanting to hear. So sweet! I think this is a truly justified Malay movie and congratulations to its winning..it's truly deserving...
